Chapter 5 - The Chase

"They took her!" Logan yelled, his voice breaking with raw, agonizing desperation.
I ran to the open window and looked down into the dark estate grounds.
Two men dressed in tactical black were sprinting toward a dark SUV parked near the tree line.
One of them was carrying a small, limp figure wrapped tightly in a white blanket.
"There!" I screamed, pointing frantically toward the vehicle.
Logan leaped up, his eyes burning with a lethal intensity I had never seen before.
He didn't run for the stairs; he jumped directly out of the second-story window.
He landed hard on the roof of the patio below, rolled flawlessly, and dropped to the grass.
I was absolutely terrified, but I couldn't let heavily armed men take a sick six-year-old child.
I followed Logan, climbing awkwardly down the heavy ivy trellis attached to the brick wall.
My hands were scraped and bleeding by the time my feet hit the cold ground.
The SUV’s engine roared to life, its bright headlights cutting through the dark night.
Logan sprinted across the lawn like a madman, firing his pistol precisely at the vehicle's tires.
One of the tires blew out with a loud bang, sending the heavy car skidding sideways into a massive oak tree.
The crash was deafening, crushing the front end of the SUV entirely.
I ran toward the smoking wreckage, praying that Sophia had survived the terrible impact.
Logan was already there, ripping the driver's side door off its hinges with terrifying strength.
He pulled the dazed driver out and threw him onto the grass, knocking him out cold.
I opened the back door, my heart lodged firmly in my throat.
Sophia was lying on the floorboard, crying weakly, but miraculously unharmed.
I scooped her up into my arms, hugging her tightly to my chest.
"I have her, Logan," I cried out, turning around to face him.
But Logan wasn't looking at us.
He was staring at the second kidnapper, who had managed to crawl out of the wreckage.

The man pulled off his black mask, revealing a face I recognized immediately.
It was my older brother, David.
