Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Betrayal

We drove for hours until we reached a secluded, fortified cabin deep in the Adirondack mountains.
Logan carried Sophia inside, gently placing her on the rustic bed near the stone fireplace.
I sterilized my medical equipment, my years of nursing training completely taking over my nerves.
I carefully drew the glowing blue liquid into a syringe, praying with all my heart that it would work.
I injected the cure smoothly into Sophia's IV line, watching the liquid flow into her tiny veins.
For the first ten agonizing minutes, nothing happened at all.
Then, the natural color slowly began to return to her pale cheeks.
Her breathing steadied beautifully, and the agonizing tremors in her small hands finally stopped.
Sophia opened her eyes, looking at me with a tired but undeniably beautiful smile.
"Thank you, Emma," the little girl whispered, her voice clear and strong for the first time in months.
I completely broke down, crying tears of pure joy and profound relief.
Logan walked up quietly behind me and placed a strong, comforting hand on my trembling shoulder.
"You saved her life, Emma," Logan said, his voice thick with genuine emotion.
"I swear to you, I will protect you and your family for the rest of my life."
A warm, hopeful feeling blossomed in my chest as I looked up at the man I had misjudged.
We had miraculously survived the nightmare, and Sophia was finally going to be completely healthy.
Logan left the room to fetch some clean water for Sophia from the kitchen down the hall.
I stood up to grab an extra blanket from Logan's heavy winter coat draped over a nearby chair.
As I pulled the blanket free, a hidden burner phone fell out of his pocket and hit the hardwood floor.
The screen lit up instantly, displaying a newly received text message that I couldn't help but read.
My heart completely stopped, and the blood turned to ice in my veins.
The message was from the assassin strike team leader at the bank.
