Chapter 7 - The Bargain

The rain began to fall, washing the blood from the crushed grass of the estate.

I held Sophia tighter, protecting her frail, trembling body from the cold wind.

My own family had murdered Logan's wife and poisoned an innocent child.

The crushing guilt was so heavy it felt like I couldn't breathe.

"We need to get off this property," Logan commanded, snapping back into his ruthless CEO persona.

"The police will be here in less than five minutes."

Logan grabbed David by his leather jacket and hauled him roughly to his feet.

"If you are lying to me about the antidote, I will skin you alive," Logan promised.

We rushed toward the hidden underground parking garage beneath the mansion.

Logan bypassed his flashy sports cars and unlocked a reinforced, bulletproof black van.

I buckled Sophia into the back seat, wrapping her in every thick blanket I could find.

Logan shoved David into the passenger seat and zip-tied his hands to the grab handle.

I sat in the back with Sophia, holding her tiny, freezing hand to comfort her.

Logan slammed on the gas, bursting out of the garage just as police sirens began wailing in the distance.

We drove in absolute, suffocating silence for an hour, taking back roads to avoid any traffic cameras.

"Where is the cure, David?" I finally asked, breaking the agonizing tension in the vehicle.

David looked at me carefully through the rearview mirror.

"It is in a secure safety deposit box at the central bank in Manhattan."

Logan gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned entirely white.

"That bank is heavily guarded, and my face is currently plastered on every news channel," Logan said.

"I can't just walk in there."

David smiled a bloody, crooked, and disturbing smile.

"I know."

"That is why Emma is going to have to steal it for us."
