Chapter 8 - The Betrayal Unveiled

I stared at the glowing GPS screen, my heart hammering violently against my bruised ribs.

Officer Davis calmly put the patrol car into gear and locked all the doors with a single, heavy click.

I demanded to know why we were heading to a private airfield instead of the federal courthouse.

He didn't even turn his head, keeping his eyes firmly fixed on the dark, winding highway.

He coldly explained that my husband owed a massive debt to a dangerous criminal syndicate, and the insurance money was meant to pay them off.

Davis was not a good cop at all, but rather the syndicate's inside man sent to ensure the baby was delivered to my husband to complete the fraud.

My sister-in-law screamed aggressively from the back seat, kicking the metal partition window with her heavy boots.

Davis simply laughed and reached for the heavy stun gun strapped securely to his tactical belt.

I knew I had only a few seconds to act before he incapacitated us completely and delivered my daughter to her death.

I unbuckled my seatbelt, grabbed the heavy steering wheel with both hands, and yanked it violently to the right.

The heavy cruiser swerved wildly off the paved road, crashing violently through a wooden guardrail and plunging down a steep embankment.

The airbags deployed with a deafening explosion, filling the crushed cabin with thick, white chemical smoke.

I checked my baby instantly, weeping with profound joy when she let out a loud, healthy cry of surprise.

Officer Davis was slumped heavily against the shattered window, completely knocked unconscious by the brutal impact.

I kicked my jammed door open, pulling myself and my daughter out into the freezing mud of the ditch.

My sister-in-law crawled out behind me, bleeding slightly from a minor cut on her forehead but otherwise completely unhurt.

We scrambled desperately up the steep, muddy hill back toward the dark highway.

As we reached the top, three massive black military-grade vehicles suddenly surrounded us, pinning us tightly in their blinding high beams.

A man stepped out of the lead vehicle wearing a dark windbreaker emblazoned with bright yellow letters spelling FBI.
