Chapter 2 - The Hidden Threat

The wail of the approaching ambulance sirens shattered the heavy silence of the parking lot.

I clutched my crying daughter tighter against my chest, terrified by the sudden drop in her body temperature.

The officer shoved my husband into the back of the patrol cruiser and slammed the heavy door shut.

I ran over to the passenger side of our vehicle and frantically pulled out the floral diaper bag.

My hands shook violently as I unzipped the main compartment and dug through the diapers and wipes.

Hidden at the very bottom, wrapped inside a plastic bag, was a small, empty glass vial and a used syringe.

The medical label on the vial was partially torn, but I could clearly read the name of a powerful, adult-grade sedative.

A paramedic rushed over to me, gently taking my daughter from my arms to assess her vital signs.

He shined a small penlight into her eyes and immediately cursed under his breath.

He told me her pupils were completely unresponsive and her heart rate was dropping to dangerous levels.

My husband had not just left our baby in a hot car to teach us a lesson.

He had actively drugged our three-month-old daughter so she would not have the energy to break a window or attract attention.

The paramedic rushed her onto a stretcher, yelling for the driver to head straight to the nearest trauma center.

I jumped into the back of the ambulance, holding my baby's tiny, limp hand as the doors closed.

Just before we sped away, my phone buzzed with an incoming text message from an unknown number.

The message read, "The police can't protect you from what I've already put in motion at the hospital."
