Chapter 7 - The Underground Escape

I dropped instantly into the dark crawlspace, feeling the cold dirt scrape harshly against my bare arms.

A deafening gunshot echoed above me, and the bullet shattered the wooden floorboard exactly where my head had been a second earlier.

I scrambled desperately through the suffocating darkness, pushing my sister-in-law forward through the narrow dirt tunnel.

Dust and loose soil rained down on my face as heavy, frantic footsteps pounded on the floorboards right above us.

My husband screamed in blind fury, firing another random shot blindly into the ground in an attempt to hit us.

We reached the end of the tunnel and pushed through a rusted metal grate covered in thick vines.

We tumbled out into the freezing night air, completely hidden by the dense, overgrown brush behind the cabin.

I could see the beam of his flashlight wildly searching the treeline in the opposite direction.

We ran blindly through the thick forest, our clothes tearing violently against the sharp thorns and jagged branches.

My daughter remained completely silent against my chest, her breathing finally growing deep and steady in the cool night air.

After miles of agonizing running, we finally stumbled upon a desolate two-lane highway illuminated by a single streetlamp.

A set of bright headlights appeared on the dark horizon, rapidly approaching our desperate position.

I jumped directly into the middle of the empty road, waving my arms wildly to force the vehicle to stop.

The car screeched to a sudden halt, the tires smoking heavily against the rough asphalt.

The driver's door swung open, and Officer Davis, the good cop from the parking lot, stepped out into the light.

I collapsed onto the pavement in sheer relief, sobbing loudly as he rushed over to help us up.

He assured me that he had been tracking my husband’s corrupt movements all night and wanted to bring him to real justice.

I climbed into the warm patrol car, feeling incredibly safe for the first time in hours.

Then, I looked closely at the complex digital map displayed glowing brightly on his dashboard screen.

The destination entered into his GPS was not the police station, but a private airplane hangar registered to my husband's name.
