Chapter 4 - The Desperate Escape

A primal surge of adrenaline washed away every ounce of fear in my body.

I knew that if I let my mother-in-law take my baby, I would never see my daughter alive again.

I dropped the heavy manila folder onto the floor, scattering the forged documents across the polished tiles.

Before the security guards could grab my arms, I shoved a heavy metal medical cart directly into their path.

The cart crashed into them, sending both men stumbling backward onto the slick hospital floor.

I sprinted down the hallway, completely ignoring the CPS worker shouting at me to stop.

My mother-in-law’s smug smile vanished as I tackled her hard against the wall outside the trauma room.

I snatched the guardianship papers from her hands and tore them into tiny, useless shreds.

I burst through the swinging doors of the trauma room, where a lone nurse was preparing an IV line for my daughter.

I recognized the nurse immediately as the young woman who had delivered my baby three months ago.

She took one look at my terrified face and immediately understood that my daughter was in grave danger.

She quickly wrapped my sleeping baby in a thick thermal blanket and handed her gently into my arms.

She pointed toward a restricted maintenance stairwell in the back corner of the room that led to the basement parking garage.

I thanked her tearfully and ran through the heavy metal door just as the security guards burst into the room behind me.

I raced down three flights of concrete stairs, clutching my baby tightly as alarms began echoing loudly through the hospital.

I burst into the dimly lit underground garage, frantically searching for an unlocked vehicle to steal.

A black SUV suddenly accelerated out of the shadows and slammed its brakes directly in front of me, blocking the exit.

The tinted driver's side window slowly rolled down to reveal the very last person I expected to see.
