Chapter 5 - The Unlikely Ally

My sister-in-law leaned across the center console of the massive SUV and threw the passenger door open.
She screamed at me to get inside immediately before the hospital security team flooded the parking garage.
I hesitated for a fraction of a second, remembering that she had initially tried to cover up my husband's horrific crime.
But the sound of heavy boots pounding rapidly down the concrete stairwell forced my hand.
I jumped into the front seat, cradling my sleeping baby tightly as my sister-in-law slammed her foot onto the gas pedal.
The heavy vehicle smashed violently through the wooden exit barrier, sending splintered wood flying across the street.
We merged recklessly onto the busy highway, weaving dangerously between large transport trucks to lose our pursuers.
I demanded to know why she was suddenly risking her own freedom to help me escape.
She kept her eyes glued to the rearview mirror, her knuckles turning completely white against the steering wheel.
She confessed that she had discovered a hidden life insurance policy in my husband's home office two days ago.
The policy was taken out on my daughter’s life for five million dollars, and it required the death to look like a tragic accident.
She finally realized that her brother was a psychopathic monster who had planned to let the baby die in the hot car to collect the payout.
She handed me a thick leather binder containing all the original, unedited documents proving his massive insurance fraud.
We drove for two hours until we reached a secluded, abandoned cabin deep in the dense pine woods.
I placed my daughter safely onto a dusty cot and finally felt a brief moment of overwhelming relief.
Then, the heavy digital lock on the SUV outside clicked loudly, and the engine suddenly roared to life on its own.
I rushed to the window and watched in absolute horror as the car slowly drove itself away into the dark woods.

My sister-in-law checked her phone and turned to me with a face completely devoid of color.
She whispered that her brother had just remotely hacked the vehicle, which meant he already knew exactly where we were.
