Chapter 7 - The Dangerous Ultimatum

The silver key dangled from Emily's fingers like a pendulum of doom.
Daniel lowered his weapon slightly, his hands shaking with unfiltered anxiety.
"Where did you get that key?" he demanded, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.
Emily knew that the safety deposit box contained the only evidence that could ruin his mother's life.
Daniel's mother had orchestrated a massive cover-up years ago, and Daniel had spent his life protecting her.
"I found it hidden in your private study while you were busy humiliating me at dinner," Emily revealed.
She offered him a simple, non-negotiable ultimatum right there in the underground vault.
"Drop the gun and surrender to the police, and I will destroy the contents of that box forever," she promised.
Daniel stared at her, torn between his burning desire for revenge and his desperate need to protect his mother.
He took a slow, agonizing step forward, his finger trembling on the trigger.
"How do I know you won't just turn the box over to the authorities anyway?" he asked bitterly.
Emily looked him dead in the eye and spoke with absolute, unwavering conviction.
"Because unlike you and your toxic family, I actually keep my promises," she replied.
Daniel let out a long, defeated sigh and slowly lowered the handgun to the floor.
He kicked the weapon away and fell to his knees in the cold, dusty vault.
Emily nodded to Marcus, who immediately pulled out his phone to call the authorities.
But before Marcus could dial, the lights in the vault completely blacked out.

A new, unfamiliar voice echoed through the pitch-black darkness.
"I am afraid I cannot let anyone leave this room with those files," the mysterious voice said.
