Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Betrayal
Daniel stared at Patricia in absolute disbelief as her words echoed in the study.
"You sold me out to save yourself?" he whispered, his voice cracking with rage.
Patricia backed away slowly toward the French doors leading to the garden.
"Emily promised to leave my personal trust fund alone if I gave her the location of your secret vault," she cried.
Daniel felt his entire world collapsing as the sirens grew louder outside the mansion.
He realized that Emily had played them against each other flawlessly.
He rushed to his hidden wall safe and spun the dial with trembling fingers.
He pulled out a loaded silver handgun and a stack of forged passports.
"You are not going anywhere with that money, Patricia," Daniel said, aiming the weapon at her.
Patricia shrieked in terror and threw the heavy suitcase directly at his chest.
The suitcase burst open, scattering millions of dollars in diamonds across the floor.
Daniel stumbled backward, and Patricia used the distraction to sprint out into the dark garden.
Instead of chasing her, Daniel ran toward the secret underground tunnel beneath his study.
He navigated the dark, damp passage that led outside the police perimeter.
He emerged in an abandoned alleyway, breathing heavily and clutching his weapon.
He checked his phone to track the location of his fifty million dollar emergency vault.
