Chapter 4 - The Crumbling Empire

Emily coughed as thick smoke filled the overturned limousine.
Marcus was bleeding from a cut on his forehead, but he was still conscious.
"We have to get out before they come back to finish the job," Marcus groaned.
They kicked open the shattered sunroof and climbed out onto the empty, dark highway.
The armored truck that had rammed them was abandoned, its driver already gone into the night.
Emily pulled her phone out and saw three missed calls from a restricted number.
She answered the ringing phone and heard Daniel's frantic, heavy breathing on the other end.
"Did you really think you could take my empire and just walk away?" Daniel threatened.
Emily wiped a streak of blood from her cheek and smiled coldly into the darkness.
"You missed, Daniel, and now I am going to take your freedom too," she replied.
She hung up the phone and flagged down a passing taxi to take them to a safe house.
Back at the mansion, Daniel paced the floor of his private study in a blind panic.
Patricia rushed into the room carrying a large suitcase filled with stolen jewelry.
"The hit failed, and the police are already surrounding the front gates!" Patricia screamed.
Daniel grabbed her by the shoulders and demanded to know how she found out about the police.

Patricia looked away guiltily, dropping a small burner phone onto the Persian rug.
"I made a deal for immunity, Daniel," Patricia confessed with a trembling voice.
