Chapter 3 - The Ambush

The morning sun had barely risen over the East River when Vance’s Aston Martin violently pulled up to a luxury brownstone in Brooklyn Heights.
He had not slept a single second, his mind poisoned by the revelation of Lila’s betrayal and the suffering Maddie had endured.
He had already dispatched his lawyers to utterly destroy Lila’s career, seizing her assets and evicting her from the apartment he paid for.
But his vengeance against his mistress brought him no peace.
He needed to see his children.
Vance bypassed the building's doorman with a terrifying glare and a heavy stack of hundred-dollar bills.
He took the elevator to the fourth floor, his heart hammering aggressively against his ribs as he stood before door 4B.
He raised his hand to knock, but the heavy wooden door unexpectedly swung open from the inside.
Maddie stood in the doorway, balancing a bag of trash in one hand and wearing a faded, oversized college sweater.
When she saw Vance towering in the hallway, all the color instantly drained from her beautiful face.
She dropped the garbage bag, the plastic hitting the hardwood floor with a dull, heavy thud.
She immediately tried to slam the door in his face, but Vance caught the heavy wood with his palm, forcing his way inside.
He demanded to know why she was living in a building owned by Grant Ellison.
Maddie backed away from him, her eyes flashing with a fierce, protective maternal rage.
She screamed at him to get out, declaring that he had lost the right to ask questions the day he walked out of that hospital three years ago.
Vance stepped closer, his voice trembling as he confessed that he never knew about the pregnancy because his phone had been compromised.
Maddie let out a bitter, mocking laugh, refusing to believe his excuses.
She told him that his ignorance did not change the fact that her children almost died while she slept on a hospital floor.
Before Vance could drop to his knees and beg for her forgiveness, a deep voice echoed from the kitchen.
Grant Ellison walked into the living room, casually wiping his hands on a dish towel as if he owned the place.
Grant stared at Vance with a cold, victorious smirk that made Vance want to commit murder.
Vance ordered Grant to step away from his family.
Grant slowly walked over to Maddie, wrapping his arm around her trembling shoulders.
Grant looked Vance dead in the eye and casually announced that the twins were no longer Vance's concern.

Grant pulled an official legal document from his jacket pocket and tossed it onto the coffee table.
It was a petition for full legal adoption, completely finalized and waiting only for a judge's signature.
