Chapter 16 - The Rescue

Vance did not wait for the FBI hostage negotiators to make a move.

He boarded his private helicopter on the roof of Callahan Biotech, ordering the pilot to fly directly into the restricted airspace of Grant’s tower.

The morning sun was just breaking over the Manhattan skyline as the helicopter hovered precariously above the Ellison penthouse.

Marcus and a highly trained extraction team rappelled down onto the private glass balcony.

Inside the sprawling, modern living room, Grant was pacing frantically with a loaded handgun.

Maddie was huddled in the corner, shielding a terrified, crying Leo with her own body.

Vance kicked the balcony glass doors with his heavy boots, the reinforced glass shivering but holding strong.

Grant turned around, aiming his weapon directly at Vance through the thick glass.

Maddie saw her opportunity and aggressively threw a heavy marble vase directly at the back of Grant’s knees.

Grant buckled in pain, the handgun slipping from his grip and sliding across the polished hardwood floor.

Before Grant could recover, Marcus deployed a specialized breaching charge on the balcony door.

The glass shattered inward with a deafening explosion, sending shards raining across the carpet.

Vance stormed into the room through the smoke, bypassing the armed guards entirely.

He tackled Grant to the floor, his massive fists raining down brutal, unforgiving blows on the man who had tortured his family.

He hit Grant for the three years of lost time, for the medical bribery, and for terrorizing the woman he loved.

Marcus finally had to physically drag Vance off the bloody, unconscious billionaire.

Vance turned around, his chest heaving, his expensive suit ruined and covered in glass.

Maddie stood up, clutching Leo to her chest, her stormy eyes wide with shock and relief.

Vance did not say a word.

He simply wrapped his arms around both of them, burying his face in Maddie’s hair as the federal agents finally breached the front door.
