Chapter 19 - The Proposal

Autumn painted the Hudson Valley estate in brilliant shades of gold and crimson.

Vance and Maddie had spent the last year rebuilding their relationship from the ground up.

There were no billionaire grand gestures, no expensive jewelry, and no manipulative power plays.

They bonded over midnight feedings, messy kitchen dinners, and reading bedtime stories to the twins.

Vance had learned to listen, to truly see the incredible strength of the woman he had once carelessly discarded.

One Saturday evening, Vance set up a simple picnic blanket under a massive oak tree in their backyard.

The twins were fast asleep in the house, watched over by a trusted nanny.

Maddie walked out into the cool evening air, wrapping a thick knitted cardigan around her shoulders.

She sat down next to Vance, leaning her head comfortably against his broad shoulder.

Vance poured her a glass of wine, his hands trembling slightly, an incredibly rare occurrence for the former ruthless CEO.

He took a deep breath, looking deeply into the storm-gray eyes that had haunted his dreams for years.

He did not pull out a massive diamond ring, knowing that their previous marriage had been built on empty, expensive illusions.

Instead, he pulled a simple, beautifully carved wooden band from his pocket.

He told Maddie that he did not want to buy her affection or trap her in a golden cage ever again.

He asked her if she would be willing to start over, not as the billionaire and the vulnerable ex-wife, but as equals.

Maddie looked at the wooden ring, tears of genuine joy spilling down her cheeks.

She reached out, gently taking the ring and sliding it onto her own finger.

She whispered that she didn't want the old Vance Callahan back.

She wanted the man sitting in front of her, the father who had fought the entire world to bring his family home.
