Chapter 13 - The Hostage

Maddie refused to leave Maya’s side, gripping the hospital bed rails with white-knuckled desperation.
She screamed for help, but Grant’s security detail quickly overpowered her.
They dragged a kicking and sobbing Maddie out of the hospital room.
Vance fought like a wild animal to stop them, breaking one guard's nose in a brutal left hook.
But a second guard drove a high-voltage taser into Vance’s ribs.
Vance collapsed to the polished floor, his muscles seizing in agonizing pain as he watched his family being dragged away.
Grant leaned over Vance’s paralyzed body, whispering that Callahan Biotech was next on his list to destroy.
By the time the hospital security arrived, Grant and his men had vanished into the night.
Vance dragged himself off the floor, his lungs burning and his heart entirely consumed by a lethal, cold focus.
He realized that playing by the rules of civil law would no longer save the woman he loved.
He picked up his secure phone and called Marcus, his ruthless head of security.
Vance ordered Marcus to bypass local authorities and assemble their most lethal corporate retrieval team.
He also demanded a heavily armed escort to maximum-security federal lockup.
He needed a weapon to destroy Grant Ellison, and he knew exactly where to find one.
An hour later, Vance sat behind a thick sheet of bulletproof glass in a bleak visitor's room.
Lila Crane walked in wearing a bright orange jumpsuit, her designer makeup entirely stripped away.
Vance looked at the woman who had tried to blackmail him, offering her a chilling deal.

He promised to hire the best defense attorneys in the country to reduce her sentence.
In exchange, Lila had to give him the exact name of the black-market clinic technician Grant had used.
