Chapter 11 - The Shattered Illusion
Vance stood in the quiet hospital corridor, the medical document trembling violently in his hands.
The words printed on the page mocked him, tearing down the fragile hope he had built over the last week.
Grant Ellison was Leo’s biological father.
A blinding, destructive rage replaced the immense relief he had felt just moments before.
He had sacrificed his company, his pride, and his legal rights for a woman who had apparently played him for a fool.
Vance kicked the nearest metal trash can, the echoing crash startling a passing nurse.
He stormed back into Maya’s private room, his stormy gray eyes dark with fury.
Maddie was sitting by the bed, gently stroking Maya’s sleeping head.
She looked up, a warm, hopeful smile on her lips, completely unaware of the storm about to hit her.
Vance threw the manila envelope directly onto her lap.
He demanded to know how long she had been sleeping with his greatest rival.
Maddie looked confused, her trembling hands pulling the thick medical report from the envelope.
She scanned the bold letters, her face instantly draining of all color.
She gasped, shaking her head frantically, swearing that she had never touched Grant before they met in Brooklyn eight months ago.
Vance laughed bitterly, asking her how a woman accidentally gets pregnant with a billionaire rival's child.
Maddie began to cry hysterically, her mind desperately racing back to the fertility clinic three years ago.
She reminded Vance that the clinic had performed the egg retrieval and fertilization while she was heavily medicated.
She looked Vance dead in the eye and swore on their daughter’s life that she had never been unfaithful.
Vance stared at her, his corporate instincts suddenly overriding his emotional betrayal.

If Maddie was telling the truth, there was only one terrifying explanation.
Someone had deliberately tampered with the IVF process to implant Grant Ellison’s genetic material into Vance’s wife.
