Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

Dominic stared at the man he had trusted with his life for over twenty years.

Elias did not look guilty, he only looked completely detached and focused on the money.

"You sold us out to a murderer, Elias," Dominic stated, his voice dangerously calm.

Elias kept the gun leveled at Dominic’s chest, slowly walking forward on the empty platform.

"Lucian promised me ten percent of the offshore accounts if I delivered the ledger," Elias explained.

Margaret leaned heavily against the elevator wall, her breathing becoming shallow and erratic.

Dominic knew he had to act immediately, or both of them would die in this underground station.

He slowly raised his hands in surrender, taking a small step forward to block his mother from the line of fire.

"You can have the ledger, just let her go to a hospital," Dominic pleaded, reaching into his jacket.

Elias smiled a cold, greedy smile and motioned for Dominic to toss the book onto the concrete floor.

Dominic pulled the heavy black ledger from his pocket and held it out in front of him.

Instead of tossing it gently, he whipped the solid leather book directly at Elias’s face with terrifying speed.

The heavy lock smashed into the bridge of Elias’s nose, shattering bone with a sickening crunch.

Elias screamed in agony and stumbled backward, firing a wild shot into the ceiling.

Dominic lunged forward, tackling his former best friend to the hard concrete tiles.

He drove his fist into Elias’s jaw, instantly knocking the treacherous man unconscious.

Dominic snatched the gun from the floor and quickly retrieved the ledger.

He ran back to the elevator and picked his mother up in his arms.

He carried her up the subway station stairs, emerging onto a busy city street just as dawn was breaking.

He flagged down a passing taxi and shoved a handful of bloody cash at the terrified driver.

"Take us to the private airfield on the edge of the city, right now," Dominic ordered, pointing the gun at the dashboard.

The driver slammed on the gas, weaving through the morning traffic with reckless desperation.

Dominic held his mother’s hand, praying they could make it to his secret private jet before Lucian tracked them down.

They finally pulled up to the chain-link fence of the secluded airstrip.

Dominic kicked the taxi door open, but he froze in absolute horror.
