Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

Margaret stood at the far end of the tunnel, flanked by four heavily armed Moretti mercenaries.
She held a heavy, electronic detonator switch in her manicured hand, her finger resting dangerously on the primary button.
"You always were remarkably stubborn, Ethan, but this is the end of the line," Margaret stated with absolute, chilling confidence.
"If you press that button, you will drown right along with us," Ethan argued, keeping his rifle aimed steadily at her chest.
Margaret laughed a harsh, grating sound that bounced violently off the damp, curved stone walls.
"I am standing behind a reinforced floodgate, little brother; I will be perfectly dry while you choke on river water," she gloated.
She demanded that Ethan completely surrender his weapons and legally sign over total control of the Caldwell syndicate immediately.
"If you do, I might just let the nurse and the crippled boy live," she offered falsely.
I knew she had absolutely no intention of leaving any surviving witnesses, especially not Noah.
Ethan slowly lowered his heavy assault rifle, placing it gently onto the muddy floor of the tunnel.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek, digital tablet, heavily encrypted and tied directly to the syndicate's master accounts.
"Fine, Margaret, you win," Ethan said softly, his voice utterly defeated.
He began typing the complex transfer codes into the tablet, transferring billions of dollars and total control over to his sister.
Margaret smiled greedily, stepping slightly closer to the heavy floodgate to verify the incoming transfer on her own device.
In that singular, split-second window of distraction, Ethan didn't hit the final transfer button.
He hit a hidden panic button that instantly activated the high-explosive charges he had secretly planted on the tablet's battery.
He hurled the glowing tablet fiercely down the tunnel, aiming perfectly for the heavily armed mercenaries flanking his sister.
"Get down!" Ethan roared, tackling Noah and me violently into the muddy water.
The tablet detonated with a blinding, terrifying flash, instantly neutralizing two of the heavily armed guards.
The explosion severely damaged the heavy floodgate controls, causing the massive steel doors to jam completely open.
Margaret screamed in pure, unadulterated fury, dropping her detonator and scrambling desperately backward as river water began rushing violently into the tunnel.
"Run for the exit, right now!" Ethan yelled, pulling us quickly to our feet.
We sprinted fiercely through the rushing, freezing water, completely ignoring the chaotic gunfire from the remaining, panicked mercenaries.
We finally burst out of the dark smuggling tunnel, emerging onto the muddy, freezing banks of the rushing river.
The cold night air hit my face like a physical blow, but I had never been so profoundly grateful to breathe in my entire life.
Ethan quickly led us to a small, hidden boathouse tucked discreetly into the overgrown reeds.
Inside was a sleek, massive, incredibly powerful armored speedboat, perfectly fueled and ready for a rapid escape.

We climbed desperately aboard, and Ethan fired up the massive twin engines, preparing to tear down the river to safety.
Just as he threw the heavy throttle forward, a massive, heavily armored helicopter suddenly emerged violently from the treeline, its blinding spotlight locking directly onto our small boat.
