Chapter 5 - The Wine Cellar

"Jump!" Ethan roared, grabbing Noah tightly and diving straight through the jagged, splintered hole in the floor.
I didn't have a second to think; I simply closed my eyes and threw myself into the dark abyss right behind them.
I hit the cold, hard stone floor of the wine cellar, rolling aggressively to absorb the brutal impact.
Seconds later, a massive, deafening explosion ripped through the ceiling above us.
The entire west wing of the mansion was violently instantly consumed in a towering, blistering inferno.
Burning debris rained down into the cellar, completely blocking the hole we had just escaped through.
We were safe from the immediate blast, but the cellar was rapidly filling with thick, toxic black smoke.
Ethan coughed heavily, illuminating the massive, sprawling cellar with a high-powered tactical flashlight.
"The cellar connects to an old Prohibition-era smuggling tunnel that leads directly to the river," Ethan explained, moving quickly.
We navigated the towering, endless racks of expensive vintage wine, the heat from the blazing inferno above pressing heavily down on us.
I kept a tight grip on Noah's hand, his small fingers trembling violently in the chaotic, terrifying darkness.
We finally reached a heavy, rusted iron door hidden behind a massive, towering oak wine barrel.
Ethan grabbed the heavy iron ring and pulled with all his massive strength, but the rusted hinges refused to budge.
"It is completely rusted shut," Ethan grunted, throwing his shoulder violently against the unforgiving metal.
The smoke was growing thicker by the second, making it incredibly difficult to breathe.
I remembered the compact pistol Ethan had tossed me earlier, pulling it quickly from my jacket pocket.
"Stand back!" I yelled, aiming the weapon directly at the heavy, rusted locking mechanism.
I fired three rapid shots, the deafening blasts echoing terribly in the confined, stone cellar.
The heavy lock shattered completely, allowing Ethan to kick the heavy iron door wide open.
We stumbled into the dark, damp, incredibly narrow dirt tunnel, gasping desperately for clean, breathable air.
Ethan led the way, his flashlight cutting a small path through the terrifying, claustrophobic darkness.
We walked for what felt like miles, the sound of the burning mansion fading entirely into a faint, distant rumble.
Suddenly, Ethan abruptly stopped, raising a hand in the darkness to signal complete, absolute silence.
I strained my ears, hearing a faint, rhythmic splashing sound coming from the tunnel ahead.
Someone was walking toward us through the ankle-deep water that had flooded the low point of the smuggling tunnel.
Ethan quickly turned his flashlight off, plunging us entirely into absolute, terrifying pitch black.
"We are completely trapped," Ethan whispered, raising his heavy assault rifle in the dark.

A bright, blinding halogen spotlight suddenly clicked on from the other end of the tunnel, pinning us completely in its harsh glare.
"Drop the weapons, Ethan, or I will flood this entire tunnel with you in it," Margaret's cold, triumphant voice echoed fiercely.
