Chapter 1 - The Shattered Window

The sound of shattering glass from the second floor ripped through the heavy silence of the Caldwell estate.
Ethan's men instantly drew their weapons, forming a protective perimeter around their boss.
I clutched Noah tightly, shielding his small body as my heart pounded wildly against my ribs.
"Get them into the safe room immediately," Ethan barked at his heavily armed guards.
He didn't wait to see if his orders were followed; he sprinted toward the main entrance of the mansion with terrifying speed.
A guard grabbed my arm roughly, pulling Noah and me toward the basement access doors.
We hurried down a dimly lit, narrow concrete corridor that smelled strongly of damp earth and old iron.
The safe room was a massive steel vault, designed specifically to withstand a military assault.
The heavy door slammed shut behind us with a definitive, echoing clang, engaging multiple electronic locks.
I set Noah down on a plush leather sofa, checking him frantically for any injuries.
"Is my dad going to be okay, Sarah?" Noah asked, his wide, frightened eyes staring up at me.
"Your dad is very strong, sweetie, he is going to be perfectly fine," I reassured him, forcing a calm smile.
I desperately wished I actually believed my own comforting words.
The Caldwell estate was supposed to be completely impenetrable, guarded by dozens of highly trained mercenaries.
Yet Margaret Hargrove, the woman who had essentially raised Noah, was seemingly orchestrating an attack from the inside.
I pulled my phone out again, staring at the photographs of the two pill bottles I had taken nights ago.
The first bottle contained a standard muscle relaxant, exactly what Noah was supposed to be taking for his condition.
The second, hidden bottle contained a highly potent, experimental paralytic agent that completely incapacitated the nervous system.
Margaret wasn't just following strict medical orders; she was actively, intentionally keeping Noah paralyzed.
But why would the trusted estate administrator want to cripple the only heir to the Caldwell empire?
Suddenly, a loud, mechanical grinding noise echoed through the safe room.
The thick steel door didn't open, but the digital keypad on the interior wall sparked violently and went completely dead.
The emergency lights flickered and then shut off, plunging the vault into absolute, suffocating darkness.
Someone hadn't just cut the power to the mansion; they had specifically locked us inside the vault and disabled the release mechanism.
A soft, staticky voice crackled to life over the room's emergency intercom system.
"Did you honestly think I would leave loose ends, Sarah?" Margaret's voice purred through the speaker.

"You should have just kept your mouth shut and let the boy stay in his chair."
Before I could demand that she let us out, a sharp, chemical smell began filtering heavily through the air vents.
