Chapter 2 - The Ventilation Shaft

The acrid smell of the chemical gas burned the inside of my nose almost instantly.
"Noah, cover your face with your shirt right now!" I yelled, pulling my own collar up over my mouth and nose.
I scrambled in the pitch black, my hands desperately feeling along the cold steel walls for the ventilation grate.
My fingers finally brushed against the cold metal slats near the ceiling.
I needed something heavy to smash it open before the room completely filled with whatever toxic gas Margaret was pumping in.
I remembered passing a heavy metal fire extinguisher mounted near the entrance of the vault.
I stumbled through the darkness, coughing violently as the gas grew thicker.
I found the extinguisher, ripped it from its bracket, and swung it wildly at the ventilation grate.
The metal groaned and bent inward with a loud crash.
I swung again and again, adrenaline fueling my desperate strikes until the grate completely popped off its hinges.
The shaft was incredibly narrow, but I knew it was our only possible exit.
"Noah, come here quickly," I called out, my voice muffled by the thick fabric of my shirt.
I hoisted his small, frail body up toward the opening.
"Crawl as fast as you can, sweetie, and do not stop until you reach the outside," I instructed him urgently.
Noah nodded bravely, pulling himself into the tight metal duct with surprising agility.
I grabbed the heavy fire extinguisher and hoisted myself up right behind him.
We crawled through the dark, echoing shaft for what felt like hours, the metal biting painfully into my knees.
The sound of distant, chaotic gunfire began echoing through the mansion walls around us.
Ethan's men were clearly engaging a heavily armed force that had breached the impenetrable estate.
We finally reached a heavy grate that looked down into the grand foyer of the mansion.
I peered through the slats, my blood running completely cold at the terrifying scene below.
Dozens of strange men in full tactical gear were systematically clearing the rooms, executing Caldwell's guards with ruthless efficiency.
They weren't just a random hit squad; they were wearing the distinct insignia of the rival Moretti crime syndicate.
Margaret hadn't just betrayed Ethan; she had sold the entire Caldwell empire to his greatest enemies.
"We can't go down there, Sarah," Noah whispered, his tiny hands trembling as he watched the carnage.
"I know, sweetie, we have to find another way," I replied, backing away from the grate.
Suddenly, a blinding flashlight beam shot directly through the slats, illuminating our faces in the dark shaft.

"I found the kid and the nurse in the ceiling vents!" a harsh, gruff voice yelled from the foyer below.
The deafening sound of a high-caliber assault rifle firing directly up into the metal duct shattered the silence.
