Chapter 4 - The Sibling Rivalry

The shocking revelation that Margaret was Ethan’s sister completely scrambled my understanding of the entire situation.
"If she is your sister, why would she paralyze her own nephew?" I asked, utterly appalled by the monstrous betrayal.
Ethan pulled a massive, heavy assault rifle from the hidden safe and tossed me a sleek, compact pistol.
"Because the Caldwell trust mandates that control of the syndicate passes to the next healthy male heir," Ethan explained grimly.
"By keeping Noah supposedly crippled, she legally invalidated his claim, leaving her as the only viable successor if I were to die."
It was a brilliantly evil, terrifyingly patient plan executed perfectly right under his nose.
"We need to get to the extraction point in the underground garage," Ethan ordered, checking his heavy weapon.
He grabbed Noah, effortlessly carrying the small boy under his arm as we moved swiftly out of the office.
The hallways were littered with the chaotic, bloody aftermath of the massive, ongoing firefight.
We navigated the sprawling mansion carefully, avoiding the main staircases where the heaviest fighting was concentrated.
Ethan moved with lethal, practiced precision, eliminating two more Moretti mercenaries before they could even raise their weapons.
We finally reached the heavy steel doors leading down to the secure underground parking garage.
Ethan punched a code into the keypad, but a flashing red light indicated the system was completely locked out.
"Margaret locked down the entire internal grid," Ethan cursed violently, slamming his fist against the heavy steel door.
Suddenly, a calm, chillingly familiar voice echoed from the intercom speaker mounted on the wall.
"You always were too reliant on technology, little brother," Margaret mocked smoothly.
"I have the garage, the exits, and the perimeter completely secured."
Ethan raised his assault rifle, aiming directly at the small security camera mounted in the corner of the ceiling.
"You are going to burn for this, Margaret," Ethan promised with deadly, unwavering certainty.
"Actually, Ethan, you are the one who is going to burn," she laughed cruelly.
"I just armed the mansion's secondary incendiary defense system, and you have exactly three minutes before this entire wing is reduced to ash."
I smelled it before I even fully understood what she was saying.
The strong, unmistakable odor of highly flammable aviation fuel was actively pumping through the ventilation system we had just escaped from.
The entire west wing was being rapidly primed for a massive, catastrophic explosion.
We were completely trapped in a dead-end hallway, surrounded by armed mercenaries, with a massive bomb ticking down.
"Ethan, there is a structural weakness in the floor above the wine cellar!" I remembered frantically from a previous repair order.

Ethan didn't hesitate; he aimed his heavy assault rifle directly at the polished hardwood floor and unleashed a relentless, deafening hail of bullets.
The floorboards splintered and completely shattered, revealing a dark, terrifying drop into the cavernous cellar below.
