Chapter 9 - The Final Standoff

I stared at the glowing green light of the biometric scanner, feeling the immense weight of the entire world on my shoulders.

Elaine gestured impatiently with the heavy detonator, completely unbothered by the terrified sobbing of the bound bank manager.

She softly commanded me to place my hand on the glass panel and permanently sign away my biological legacy.

I took a slow, deliberate step forward, desperately trying to stall for as much time as possible.

I looked directly into Elaine's cold, calculating eyes and asked her if she truly hated her own sister that much.

Elaine's fake, pleasant smile instantly vanished, replaced by a mask of pure, unadulterated venom and deeply rooted jealousy.

She aggressively ranted about how Laura had always been the favorite child, entirely inheriting the massive family empire.

She proudly confessed that she had meticulously planned the car crash for years to steal the fortune she rightfully deserved.

I slowly raised my hand toward the glowing scanner, listening closely to the quiet static in my hidden earpiece.

Daniel whispered softly into my ear, confirming that he had successfully navigated the dark ventilation shafts above us.

He instructed me to keep her completely distracted for exactly ten more seconds.

I pulled my hand away from the scanner at the very last moment, claiming that the glass was too dirty to read my prints.

Elaine screamed in absolute frustration and instinctively took a threatening step toward me.

Suddenly, the heavy metal ventilation grate directly above Elaine violently crashed to the marble floor.

Daniel dropped silently from the ceiling and aggressively tackled Elaine to the hard ground.

He tightly grabbed her right wrist, desperately trying to keep her thumb firmly pressed down on the deadly detonator switch.

Elaine fought back with incredible, psychotic strength, wildly scratching at Daniel's face with her free hand.

I sprinted toward the terrified bank manager and quickly began ripping the heavy duct tape off his mouth.

During the chaotic, violent struggle on the floor, Elaine managed to violently twist her wrist out of Daniel's grip.

The heavy plastic detonator slipped from her hand and shattered completely against the solid marble floor.

I closed my eyes and braced myself for the deafening, fiery explosion that would undoubtedly end our lives.

The room fell completely silent.

Absolutely nothing happened.

I opened my eyes and stared at the shattered pieces of plastic resting harmlessly on the floor.

Elaine had completely bluffed us with a highly realistic, but entirely fake, dead-man's switch to ensure my compliance.

Daniel quickly pinned Elaine to the ground, heavily breathing as he realized we had actually survived the horrific ordeal.

We had finally won.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the vault slowly creaked open behind me.

May you like

I turned around with a triumphant smile, completely expecting to see Margaret and the federal police arriving to arrest Elaine.

Instead, Martin Ellison walked slowly into the brightly lit vault, holding a massive, fully loaded tactical shotgun.
