Chapter 3 - The Burning Betrayal

Elaine stood in the doorway, bleeding heavily from a deep laceration across her forehead.

The digital timer on the explosive device in her hands was rapidly counting down from sixty seconds.

Daniel kept his pistol aimed directly at her chest, screaming for her to drop the weapon immediately.

Elaine fell to her knees and began sobbing hysterically, begging us to listen to her before it was too late.

She gently placed the explosive device onto the floor and slid it far away from her body.

Luis rushed forward, bravely kneeling beside the bomb to quickly analyze the complex wiring.

Elaine looked at me with wild, desperate eyes, claiming that Martin had gone completely insane.

She swore that she had no idea about the murders until Martin recently confessed everything in a drunken rage.

She claimed she had bravely fought him to save Aunt Rebecca, which resulted in her severe head injury.

Elaine pulled a small, black burner phone from her coat pocket and tossed it onto the sofa next to me.

She said the phone contained the exact GPS coordinates of the abandoned warehouse where Martin was keeping Rebecca.

I stared at the woman I had called my mother, desperately wanting to believe her tearful apology.

Luis wiped the sweat from his forehead and announced that he had successfully deactivated the explosive timer.

Margaret stepped forward and demanded to know why Elaine had brought a bomb to our safe house.

Elaine claimed that Martin had strapped it to her and forced her to deliver it as a final warning.

I picked up the burner phone and opened the audio files Elaine claimed were Martin's drunken confessions.

I pressed play on the first file and listened closely to the chaotic, muffled argument recorded in the background.

My blood ran completely cold as I recognized the distinct, commanding tone of the voices.

Martin was not the one aggressively yelling or making the terrifying physical threats.

He was crying and begging for his life, apologizing for leaving a trail of evidence in the basement safe.

The person aggressively screaming and ordering Martin to kidnap Aunt Rebecca was actually Elaine.

I looked up from the phone, realizing that Elaine was the true, cold-blooded mastermind behind the entire criminal operation.

Elaine saw the sudden realization dawn on my face, and her tearful, pathetic expression instantly vanished.

She smiled a wicked, terrifying smile and took a sudden step backward into the rainy night.

She pulled a remote detonator from her sleeve and pressed the bright red button without a single moment of hesitation.

The explosive device on the floor did not detonate, but a massive steel security shutter violently slammed down over the front door.

We were completely locked inside the reinforced safe house with no possible way to escape.

A thick, sweet-smelling, and highly toxic yellow gas began pouring rapidly into the room through the overhead ventilation vents.
