Chapter 8 - The Hostage Ultimatum

Elaine's chilling voice completely paralyzed every single person standing in the freezing rain.
Margaret let out a terrified gasp, her hands flying to her mouth as tears instantly filled her eyes.
Elaine casually explained that she had heavily armed mercenaries waiting at Margaret's private residence.
She stated that Margaret's husband would be brutally executed if we did not follow her exact instructions.
Elaine demanded that I meet her at the central vault of the national bank in exactly one hour.
She needed my living, breathing biometric signature to legally transfer the billions of dollars into her untraceable accounts.
If I brought the police, or if I failed to show up on time, Margaret's husband would die instantly.
Elaine abruptly disconnected the call, leaving us entirely alone with the terrifying reality of her power.
Daniel quickly searched Martin's pockets and found the keys to the abandoned police cruiser parked at the top of the hill.
We dragged Martin up the muddy embankment and forcefully shoved him into the caged backseat of his own vehicle.
Margaret was sobbing uncontrollably, completely willing to surrender her own life to save her innocent husband.
I firmly placed my hand on her shoulder and promised her that nobody else was going to die tonight.
Daniel took the wheel of the police cruiser, activating the emergency sirens to completely clear the traffic ahead.
We raced through the dark, rain-soaked streets of Seattle at terrifying, breakneck speeds.
I looked at Daniel, my newly discovered brother, and felt a profound sense of absolute trust and undeniable connection.
We quickly formulated a desperate, highly dangerous plan to outsmart our psychotic aunt.
We arrived at the massive, marble-columned banking facility just as the torrential storm began to worsen.
The bank was supposedly closed for the night, but the heavy glass doors were standing wide open.
Daniel handed me a small, concealed earpiece so we could maintain constant communication inside the building.
He promised to sneak into the facility through the underground maintenance tunnels while I provided a distraction.
I took a deep breath, completely terrified but entirely determined to end this nightmare forever.
I walked slowly through the dark, echoing lobby and descended the grand staircase toward the subterranean vault.
The massive, circular steel door of the main vault was completely open, revealing the brightly lit interior.
Elaine was standing in the center of the secure room, wearing an immaculate designer suit and a confident smile.
She was holding a highly complex detonator switch tightly in her right hand.
Sitting in a chair next to her was the terrified bank manager, completely bound and gagged with heavy duct tape.
Strapped tightly across the bank manager's chest was a massive block of military-grade plastic explosives.
Elaine smiled warmly at me, completely ignoring the fact that she was holding a deadly dead-man's switch.

She proudly welcomed me to the vault and pointed directly to the glowing biometric scanner on the desk.
She coldly stated that if her thumb slipped off the trigger for even a second, the entire building would instantly vaporize.
