Chapter 5 - The Family Secret

Luis sprinted toward the metal chair and dropped to his knees in front of the massive explosive device.

He pulled a small flashlight and a pair of wire cutters from his tactical vest with violently trembling hands.

The digital timer flashed ominously, dropping below forty-five seconds as the deafening silence filled the warehouse.

Daniel and Margaret stood guard near the entrance, their weapons drawn and ready for an impending ambush.

I knelt beside Aunt Rebecca and gently patted her bruised face, desperately trying to wake her up.

She slowly opened her swollen eyes and gasped in absolute terror when she saw the blinking red numbers on her chest.

I held her shaking hands and softly promised her that we were not going to leave her behind.

Luis carefully examined the complex web of red and blue wires crossing over the main detonator.

He took a deep breath, muttered a quiet prayer, and sharply snipped the thick blue wire.

The glowing red numbers instantly froze at exactly three seconds left on the digital clock.

A collective sigh of immense relief echoed through the dark, damp warehouse.

We quickly untied the heavy ropes binding Rebecca and helped her stand on her weakened legs.

Rebecca hugged me tightly, crying into my shoulder as she thanked us for saving her life.

She reached into her torn coat pocket and pulled out a small, blood-stained leather diary.

Rebecca explained that she had found this diary hidden at the very bottom of Martin's floor safe.

The diary belonged to my biological mother, Laura Pierce, and it contained the darkest secret of my past.

I carefully opened the fragile pages and read the frantic, messy handwriting of the woman who gave me life.

The diary detailed Laura's intense fear that someone within her own family was trying to murder her.

She wrote that she was actively planning to flee the country with her massive fortune and her children.

The word "children" completely stopped my heart, forcing me to re-read the sentence multiple times.

I looked at Margaret in absolute confusion, stating that the official crash report only listed one missing infant.

Margaret frowned and leaned over my shoulder to read the faded ink on the old paper.

Laura's diary explicitly confirmed that I was not an only child.

I had a biological older brother who was also sitting in the backseat of the car on the night of the murders.

Rebecca pointed to a specific paragraph describing a very distinct, crescent-shaped birthmark on my brother's left wrist.

Daniel, who had been listening quietly to the conversation, suddenly dropped his pistol onto the concrete floor.

His face turned completely pale as he slowly rolled up the left sleeve of his dark tactical shirt.

He extended his arm toward the dim light of the flashlight, his hand trembling uncontrollably.

Right there, clearly visible on his wrist, was a perfectly crescent-shaped, dark brown birthmark.
