Chapter 8 - The Syndicate's Leader

The massive man pressed his boot harder against my wrist, forcing a gasp of pain from my lungs.
He aimed a heavy assault rifle directly at my face, a cruel smile twisting his scarred features.
"You should have just signed the money over, Audrey," the leader sneered in a thick accent.
I recognized his voice immediately from the encrypted phone call earlier that day.
The firefight raged around us, but we were completely isolated in the corner of the chaotic ward.
He reached down and grabbed a manual ventilation bag, dangling it mockingly out of my reach.
"Your husband owes me fifty million dollars, and I am collecting his debt in blood," he stated coldly.
I looked past him and saw Liam's tiny chest struggling desperately for air.
A fierce, uncontrollable mother's rage completely consumed every rational thought in my brain.
I ignored the crushing pain in my wrist and violently swung my free leg upward.
My heavy boot connected squarely with his knee, shattering the joint with a sickening crack.
The leader roared in agony, stumbling backward and dropping the assault rifle.
I scrambled to my feet, snatching the manual ventilation bag from the floor.
I quickly attached it to Liam's breathing tube and began pumping rhythmic, life-saving air into his lungs.
Arthur's lead mercenary noticed my desperate situation and rushed forward to assist me.
The mercenary tossed me a second ventilation bag for Chloe before turning his rifle on the crippled leader.
"Do not kill him yet," Arthur's booming voice commanded from the doorway of the ruined ward.
My grandfather walked into the room, seemingly untouched by the violent battle that had just concluded.
The remaining syndicate attackers were either dead or heavily restrained by the private security team.
Arthur stood over the bleeding leader, leaning his silver cane directly against the man's throat.
"Who gave you the exact bypass codes for my hospital's security grid?" Arthur demanded fiercely.
The leader coughed up blood and laughed weakly, knowing his life was completely over.
"It was not your pathetic grandson-in-law," the man gasped with a wicked grin.

He looked directly at me with eyes full of pure, absolute evil.
"It was your own head of security, and he is currently locking down the entire building."
