Chapter 4 - The Front Door

The tiny flame illuminated the pure, unhinged madness in my husband's eyes.

He stared at us with a cold, calculating grin that sent shivers down my spine.

Before he could drop the match, a massive crash shook the entire foundation of the house.

The front door burst open, splintering the wooden frame into jagged pieces.

My father rushed into the hallway like a furious, unstoppable force of nature.

He tackled Evan violently around the waist just as the match slipped from his fingers.

The lit match miraculously landed safely in a puddle of water near the kitchen sink.

Evan roared in fierce anger and punched my father hard in the jaw.

The two men wrestled violently on the floor, knocking over heavy chairs and tables.

"Lena, get the boy outside right now!" my father shouted over the chaotic struggle.

I grabbed Noah's hand tightly and pulled him through the broken front doorway.

We stumbled desperately onto the wet grass of our front lawn.

Flashing red and blue lights suddenly filled the dark street.

Three police cruisers screeched to a halt in front of our driveway.

I raised my bloody hands to wave them down for help.

A loud, deafening gunshot suddenly rang out from inside the dark house.
