The phone shattered into a dozen useless pieces of plastic and glass.

My only lifeline to the outside world was completely gone.

Evan stepped over the broken electronic pieces and smiled a terrible smile.

"Your father is twenty minutes away," Evan said softly.

"I only need five minutes to finish this."

I tried to push myself up from the cold tile.

Pain ripped through my broken ribs like a jagged piece of shattered glass.

I grabbed Noah by the arm and shoved him behind my back to protect him.

"Run to the bathroom and lock the door right now," I whispered to him.

Noah shook his head, his tiny hands gripping my bloody shirt.

Evan walked slowly and deliberately toward the kitchen counter.

He opened the top drawer and pulled out a heavy roll of silver duct tape.

"Nobody is going anywhere tonight," my husband announced.

He grabbed me violently by the hair and dragged me toward the basement door.

I screamed for Noah to run out the front door and find a neighbor.

Evan stopped dragging me and turned his head toward the dark hallway.

He smiled cruelly and flipped the main electrical breaker switch on the wall.

The entire house immediately plunged into absolute, suffocating darkness.
