Chapter 6 - The Freezing Order

I stared at the horrifying contract, bile rising in my throat as the sheer evil of my father’s plan became clear.

He didn’t just want my house or the insurance money.

He had promised my baby to someone else to settle a massive, illegal gambling debt.

"We have enough evidence here to put him in federal prison for the rest of his life," Marcus said, looking over my shoulder at the documents.

"We need to get this to the FBI, not the local police," Samantha stated firmly.

Suddenly, the heavy front door of my house rattled violently as a key turned in the lock.

"He's here," I whispered, clutching Leo tightly to my chest.

We scrambled out of the master bathroom and slipped into the shadows of the long upstairs hallway.

The front door kicked open, and Richard walked in, accompanied by two massive, armed men in cheap suits.

"Tear the walls down if you have to, find that safe!" Richard ordered, his voice echoing through the ruined living room.

We crept silently toward the back staircase, praying the floorboards wouldn't creak.

We made it down to the garage and slipped out through the hidden storm door just as we heard them smashing the bathroom tiles upstairs.

We drove through the night, heading straight for the FBI field office in the city.

Samantha used her connections to secure a late-night emergency meeting with Special Agent Harris, a man known for taking down corporate crime syndicates.

We sat in the sterile conference room, placing the black leather binder on the metal table.

Agent Harris reviewed the documents, his expression growing darker with every page he turned.

"This is incredibly damning, Mrs. Moore," Harris said, closing the binder.

"I can authorize a raid on your father's compound by sunrise based on this evidence."

I finally let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for nine months.

"However," Agent Harris continued, looking at his computer monitor with a deep frown.

"I cannot unlock your frozen bank accounts or return your property to you right now."

"Why not?" Samantha demanded, standing up.

"Because," Harris sighed heavily, turning the monitor around to face us.

"Richard Vale was found dead in his home office an hour ago with your husband's missing gun, and you are the prime suspect."
