Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Inheritance

I could hear the SWAT officers shouting orders, their laser sights painting my father's chest with glowing red dots.

"You have nowhere to run, Richard," I choked out, fighting against his tight grip on my throat.

"If I go down, you go down with me!" he roared, his finger tightening on the trigger.

I remembered the self-defense classes Nathan had insisted we take when we first moved into the house.

I didn't hesitate.

I drove the heavy heel of my boot backward, stomping down onto my father's instep with crushing force.

As he gasped in pain, I swung the heavy, metal biometric scanner backward, smashing it squarely into his nose.

Richard screamed, dropping the gun as his hands flew to his shattered face.

I dove to the wooden planks of the pier just as the SWAT team swarmed forward, tackling him to the ground.

Agent Harris ran over, helping me to my feet as they securely handcuffed my father.

"It's over, Elena," Harris said, smiling warmly. "We got him, and we recovered the flash drive from his pocket."

The next few weeks felt like waking up from a decade-long nightmare.

The federal authorities seized all of Richard's illegal assets and formally cleared my name of all fabricated charges.

The offshore trust fund was fully restored, legally transferred into my name and secured for Leo's future.

I stood on the porch of my beautiful home, taking a deep breath of the crisp autumn air.

The house was fully repaired, the broken locks replaced, and the nursery upstairs was finally filled with the happy sounds of my beautiful baby boy.

Samantha had become a permanent part of our lives, visiting every weekend to help me decorate the living room.

I finally had my home, my son, and the peace I had fought so desperately to secure.

I sat down on the porch swing, rocking gently as I watched the sunset with Leo sleeping soundly in my arms.

Then, a black delivery van pulled into the driveway, and a courier stepped out to hand me a thick manila envelope with no return address.

Inside the envelope was a single, crystal-clear photograph of Nathan, sitting at a cafe in Paris and holding today's morning newspaper.

Written on the back of the photograph in his unmistakable handwriting were the words: "I am so sorry I had to leave, but they are still coming for us."
