Chapter 4 - The Paid Assassin

I stared at the empty doorway long after Bianca had left, the chilling truth settling deep into my bones.

"Samantha, my husband didn't die in an accident," I said, my voice eerily calm.

Samantha stopped pacing and looked at me, realizing exactly what I was implying.

"Bianca was wearing the necklace Nathan had on the day he died," I explained.

"And she knew about the fire, which means Richard didn't just steal my money."

"He murdered Nathan," Samantha finished the thought, pulling out her encrypted cell phone.

I needed to get out of this hospital and take the fight directly to my father before he destroyed the evidence.

"I have emergency cash in a secondary lockbox," Samantha said, already typing rapidly on her screen.

"I am hiring Marcus, the best private investigator in the state, and we are going to audit that crash."

The next twenty-four hours were a blur of medical checks, feeding Leo, and plotting my revenge from a hospital bed.

When the doctor finally cleared me for discharge, I felt a dangerous, unfamiliar fire burning inside my chest.

Marcus, the private investigator, met us in the hospital parking garage, leaning against a black SUV.

He handed me a thick manila folder as soon as I buckled Leo into his car seat.

"You were right to be suspicious, Mrs. Moore," Marcus said grimly.

"I tracked the finances of the truck driver who supposedly fell asleep at the wheel and hit your husband."

I opened the folder, my eyes scanning the highlighted bank records.

"Two days before the crash, a shell company in the Cayman Islands wired half a million dollars into the driver's secret account," Marcus stated.

I looked at the name of the shell company's registered agent.

It was Richard Vale.

My father had paid a man to ram a massive eighteen-wheeler into my husband's car.

Suddenly, Samantha's phone rang loudly, shattering the tense silence in the SUV.

She answered it, listened for a few seconds, and turned to me with wide, terrified eyes.

"Elena, the police just issued a warrant for your arrest," Samantha gasped.

"Richard gave them doctored emails proving you hired the truck driver to kill Nathan for the insurance money."
