Chapter 1 - The Emergency Proxy

The cold concrete of the porch bit into my skin as the pain tore through my abdomen.
I gripped my phone so hard my knuckles turned white.
Samantha’s words echoed in my ears over the sound of my own ragged breathing.
She had just told me that my father might have triggered an automatic fraud clause by forging my signature.
I stared through the open doorway, watching Richard confidently rummage through my deceased husband’s private desk.
He was looking for the original deed to the house.
He did not care that his pregnant daughter was outside, gasping in agony as her water pooled on the ground.
A siren wailed in the distance, growing louder with every passing second.
I had managed to dial 911 right after speaking to Samantha, refusing to let my father control this situation.
The ambulance screeched to a halt in my driveway, its red lights flashing against the gray morning sky.
Two paramedics rushed out, carrying a stretcher toward the porch.
Richard stepped out of the front door, adjusting his expensive tie, playing the role of the concerned parent.
He looked right at the paramedics and put on a mask of pure sorrow.
"Thank goodness you are here," Richard lied smoothly.
"My daughter is in deep grief over her husband's death, and the stress just sent her into premature labor."
The female paramedic knelt beside me, quickly checking my vitals.
"We need to get her to the maternity ward immediately," the paramedic said.
Richard stepped forward, blocking their path to the ambulance.
"I will be riding with her and making all of her medical decisions," he announced.
I tried to scream, but another wave of agonizing contractions stole the air from my lungs.
"No," I managed to whisper, shaking my head violently.
Richard pulled a folded legal document from his breast pocket and handed it to the EMT.
"I have a signed medical proxy granting me full medical and psychiatric control over my daughter due to her fragile mental state," he said.

My heart stopped completely.
If he got me into that hospital under his control, he could declare me unfit, take my baby, and steal my house.
