Chapter 3 - The Missing Heirloom

I held my newborn son, Leo, tightly against my chest as the reality of Samantha's words washed over me.

"How could he access an offshore account?" I asked, my voice trembling with exhaustion.

"He had an inside man at the bank who accepted the forged power of attorney before I could flag it," Samantha explained.

She paced the small hospital room, her heels clicking aggressively against the linoleum floor.

"Nathan set up that trust specifically so Richard could never touch it," I said, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes.

"Richard used an obscure loophole tied to Nathan's old business debts from a decade ago," Samantha replied.

He had claimed the estate owed his holding company millions, and the corrupt banker had pushed the transfer through immediately.

I looked down at Leo, knowing I had to fight not just for my home, but for his entire future.

A soft knock interrupted us, and the hospital room door creaked open.

Bianca strutted inside, holding a ridiculous bouquet of cheap gas station flowers.

"Richard is dealing with the police downstairs, but I wanted to congratulate the new mother," she smiled wickedly.

Samantha stepped between us, glaring at my father's young wife.

"You have no right to be here, Bianca," I spat out, holding Leo closer.

Bianca tossed the flowers onto the foot of my bed.

As she reached up to adjust the collar of her designer blouse, a heavy silver chain slipped out from beneath her fabric.

My breath hitched in my throat.

Dangling from that chain was a unique, custom-made sapphire pendant.

It was Nathan's family heirloom, the one he wore every single day, the one that the police said was lost in the fiery car crash.

"Where did you get that necklace?" I demanded, my blood turning to ice.

Bianca quickly tucked the pendant back under her shirt, her confident smile faltering for a split second.

"It's just a vintage piece Richard bought me for my birthday," she lied, backing toward the door.

"It’s funny how fast Nathan’s car went up in flames, isn't it?" she added, her eyes flashing with cruel amusement.

She shouldn't have known the car caught fire.

The police had explicitly kept the fire a secret from the press to prevent a media circus, and I had never told my father.
