Chapter 7 - The Interrogation

I sat in a cold, windowless interrogation room for three agonizing hours.

The metal chair was deeply uncomfortable, and the fluorescent lights buzzed relentlessly overhead.

Detective Miller walked into the room and tossed a thick file onto the metal table.

"Your husband paints a very disturbing picture of your recent behavior, Clare," the detective started.

I kept my mouth completely shut, remembering Arthur's strict instructions to wait for him.

"He says you were furious when your father refused to give you an early advance on the inheritance," Miller continued.

"I want my lawyer," I said clearly and firmly.

The detective leaned forward, trying to intimidate me with a harsh stare.

"We found the offshore account under your maiden name, Clare."

My heart skipped a beat, but I maintained my blank expression.

Mark had truly thought of absolutely everything to frame me perfectly.

The door opened, and Arthur finally walked in, wearing his sharpest legal suit.

"This interview is entirely over, Detective," Arthur announced with commanding authority.

"We have compelling evidence that ties Mark directly to the bank fraud," Arthur added.

He handed the detective a freshly printed affidavit.

"The bank teller, Jessica Thorne, just gave a full confession to the FBI thirty minutes ago."

The detective looked at the document, his confident demeanor cracking slightly.

Jessica had admitted that Mark coerced her into forging the documents and opening the fake offshore account.

"She also provided the original security footage of Mark stealing your father's prescription pad," Arthur said with a triumphant smirk.

The detective sighed, closing his thick file immediately.

"You are free to go, Clare, but do not leave the city limits," the detective muttered.

I walked out of the police station feeling like I could finally breathe again.

But when we reached the parking lot, Arthur stopped walking and checked his phone.

"Clare, we have a massive new problem," Arthur whispered anxiously.

"Mark just kidnapped your mother-in-law and his sister, and he is demanding a ransom from your trust fund."
