Chapter 2 - The Hidden Truth

I dropped the phone onto the bed and rushed over to the heavy oak desk.
The top drawers were filled with ordinary things like pens, sticky notes, and old receipts.
I pulled hard on the bottom drawer, but it was firmly locked.
Remembering my father's old habits, I reached behind the wooden frame of the desk lamp.
My fingers brushed against a small brass key taped to the back of the metal base.
I slid the key into the lock and heard a satisfying click.
Inside the drawer, there was only a single red folder sitting in the center.
I opened it and found a stack of glossy photographs that made my blood run cold.
They were pictures of Mark sitting in a dark restaurant with a beautiful, much younger woman.
In one of the photos, Mark was handing her a thick manila envelope.
Underneath the photos was a detailed report from a private investigator my father had hired.
The report revealed that Mark had been funneling our joint savings into a secret offshore account for months.
My husband had not just quit his job yesterday.
He had actually been fired three weeks ago for embezzling company funds.
I realized with absolute horror that Mark needed my inheritance to cover up his corporate theft.
The sound of a car door slamming shut echoed from the driveway outside.
I peaked through the bedroom blinds and saw Mark's truck parked directly behind my car.
He was storming up the front walkway with a furious expression on his face.

Then my phone buzzed with a text message from Arthur.
"Do not let him know you found the folder, because he is the primary suspect in your father's sudden death."
