Chapter 6 - The Setup

I felt the air completely leave my lungs.
"He accused me of murdering my own father?" I gasped in horror.
Arthur nodded slowly, his eyes glued to the breaking alert on his computer screen.
"Mark is claiming that you wanted the inheritance early to fund a secret gambling addiction."
"That is insane, I have never gambled a day in my life," I cried out.
"He has meticulously fabricated bank statements to make it look like you do," Arthur explained.
The depth of Mark's psychological manipulation was absolutely terrifying.
He had spent months planting fake evidence just in case his original plan failed.
My phone began to vibrate violently in my purse.
It was a call from our local police department.
"Do not answer that right now," Arthur instructed firmly.
He told me that if I went to the police station without concrete proof, I would be arrested immediately.
We needed to find the original source of the forged financial documents.
I remembered the photographs of the young woman in the dark restaurant.
"The woman in the photos," I said suddenly, pulling the red folder from my purse.
I laid the glossy pictures across the mahogany conference table.
Arthur examined the face of the young woman closely.
"I know exactly who this is," Arthur said with a sharp intake of breath.
"She works at the central bank branch where your joint accounts are held."
Mark had seduced a bank teller to help him forge the mortgage and the fake gambling debts.
"If we can get her to confess, Mark's entire web of lies will instantly collapse," Arthur said.
Before we could formulate a plan, the glass door to the conference room swung open.

Two uniformed police officers walked into the room with their hands resting on their utility belts.
"Clare Hail, we need you to come with us for questioning regarding the death of Walter Hail," the taller officer commanded.
