Chapter 5 - The Vicious Turn

Mark froze completely, his face draining of all color.

"I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about," Mark stammered weakly.

Arthur pulled a small, sealed plastic evidence bag from his briefcase.

Inside the bag was a clear prescription bottle with my father's name printed on it.

"The private investigator found this in your father's trash can, Clare," Arthur explained.

"The pills inside this bottle are dangerously high doses of a stimulant, not his prescribed heart medication."

My stomach dropped as the horrific reality crashed over me.

Mark had intentionally swapped my father's pills to induce a fatal heart attack.

"You murdered him," I whispered, staring at the stranger I had married.

Mark panicked and lunged across the table to grab the plastic bag.

Arthur swiftly pulled it out of his reach.

"The police are already testing the fingerprints on that bottle, Mark," Arthur warned.

Mark backed away toward the heavy glass door of the conference room.

"You cannot prove anything, and I am still legally entitled to half of our shared assets," he shouted.

"Including the massive debt you forged in my name?" I fired back.

Mark sneered at me with absolute contempt.

"You will never see a dime of that inheritance, Clare, because I am going to destroy your life."

He stormed out of the office, slamming the glass door so hard it rattled the walls.

I looked at Arthur, my entire body trembling with a mixture of rage and grief.

"We have him cornered, right?" I asked desperately.

Arthur sighed heavily and rubbed his temples.

"Not exactly, Clare, because he just transferred the entire second mortgage balance into an offshore account."

Arthur looked at his laptop screen with a grim expression.

"And he just filed a police report claiming you were the one who swapped the medication."
