Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

Six months later, the morning sun poured brightly into the kitchen of my brand-new home.
The criminal trial had been incredibly swift, resulting in a thirty-year prison sentence for Mark without the possibility of parole.
Diane and Melissa had tried to beg me for financial help after the trial, but I firmly cut all contact with them.
I had fully inherited my father's twelve-million-dollar estate, completely free of any legal complications.
I spent my days managing the charitable foundation I had created in my father's honor.
Life was finally peaceful, quiet, and wonderfully secure.
I poured myself a cup of expensive coffee and walked out onto my massive wooden deck.
The birds were singing, and the fresh air felt like an absolute victory.
I had reclaimed my independence, protected my father's legacy, and completely defeated the man who tried to ruin me.
I smiled up at the clear blue sky, knowing my father would be incredibly proud of my strength.
Later that afternoon, I drove to the downtown bank to open my father's last remaining safety deposit box.
The bank manager handed me the heavy metal container and left me alone in the private viewing room.
At the very bottom of the box, buried under old tax returns, was a faded birth certificate.
It belonged to a boy named Thomas Hail, born exactly two years before me.

Attached to the certificate was a handwritten note from my father, dated just a week before his death.
"He will come for his half of the money soon, Clare, and he is not as forgiving as you."
