Chapter 7 - The Digitalis Threat

I stared into my brother's cold, calculating eyes, feeling a wave of absolute disgust wash over me.

He was actually weaponizing our mother's life to extort me in front of a hundred people.

I looked down at my mother, whose lips were rapidly turning a terrifying shade of blue.

She wasn't faking this medical emergency to cause a dramatic distraction.

She was genuinely fighting for every single breath, her hands clawing frantically at her own throat.

I realized that Robert wasn't just being greedy; he was completely desperate.

I shoved Robert away from her with all the physical strength I could muster.

I screamed for my security team to call an ambulance and clear the immediate area.

Robert stumbled backward, laughing a cruel, unhinged laugh that echoed through the silent ballroom.

He confidently declared that an ambulance would never make it through the holiday traffic in time to save her.

He pulled a folded legal contract from his jacket pocket and threw it onto my chest.

He demanded that I sign the property transfer right now if I wanted to see her breathe again.

I refused to negotiate with a psychopath, pressing my hands against my mother's chest to begin CPR.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom burst open with incredible force.

A team of local paramedics rushed into the room, pushing a heavy medical stretcher ahead of them.

One of my loyal guests, a retired emergency dispatcher, had called 911 the moment my mother collapsed.

The medics shoved me aside, hooking my mother up to a complex series of digital monitors.

They checked her dilated pupils and immediately began pushing heavy medications through an IV line.

The lead paramedic looked at the erratic heart monitor and turned to the crowd with a grim expression.

He loudly announced that this was absolutely not a natural heart attack.

He stated that the victim was exhibiting the exact chemical symptoms of acute digitalis poisoning.
