Chapter 3 - The Ghost

Silvio threw his body over the children as shattered glass and twisted metal rained down around them.

The armored vehicle aggressively rammed the side of their sedan, pinning the driver's door against a concrete pillar.

Four heavily armed mercenaries jumped out of the truck, their assault rifles raised and laser sights activated.

Silvio knew he could not fight heavily armed men in a confined space while protecting two kids.

He kicked open the passenger side door and shoved Ethan and Mia out into the dusty darkness.

He ordered them to run toward the rusted stairwell at the back of the warehouse and not look back.

Silvio grabbed a heavy steel wrench from the floorboard and leaped out of the crushed vehicle.

He hurled the wrench with deadly precision, striking the closest mercenary squarely in the helmet.

The man stumbled backward, his finger slipping off the trigger of his automatic weapon.

Silvio used the momentary distraction to sprint toward the shadows, dodging a hail of suppressed gunfire.

He bounded up the rusted metal stairs, catching up to the terrified children on the upper catwalk.

They scrambled across the precarious walkway as bullets sparked against the iron railings right behind them.

Silvio kicked open a heavy roof access door and pushed the kids out into the freezing night air.

They ran across the vast, gravel-covered roof of the warehouse, searching for any possible fire escape.

Silvio spotted a narrow rusted ladder leading down into a dark, narrow alleyway between two buildings.

He hurried the children down the ladder, his muscles burning with exhaustion and surging adrenaline.

They hit the wet pavement and ran toward the bustling city streets to blend into the evening crowd.

Silvio finally pulled out his phone and dialed the only man he still trusted in this corrupted city.

His old military commander, Marcus, answered the phone on the very first ring.

Silvio desperately asked for a safe house, and Marcus immediately agreed to send a highly secure extraction van.

As Silvio hung up the phone, a horrifying realization washed over him.

He had never actually told Marcus what city they were currently hiding in.
