Chapter 9 - The Final Breath

Marcus stepped into the cramped bathroom, his eyes filled with pure, murderous hatred.

He told me that I had ruined his entire life and humiliated his powerful family.

He racked the shotgun slowly, enjoying the absolute terror radiating from my trembling body.

I raised the pistol Agent Reynolds had given me, but my hands were shaking too violently to aim.

Marcus laughed at my pathetic attempt to defend myself and took another step forward.

He promised me that he would tell the police I tragically shot myself out of immense guilt.

My stomach contracted with a sudden, agonizing wave of intense pain.

My water broke, soaking the floor of the bathtub in the middle of a deadly firefight.

I let out a blood-curdling scream, completely paralyzed by the overwhelming pain of sudden labor.

Marcus raised the shotgun to his shoulder, ready to end my life and the life of my child.

Before he could pull the trigger, a deafening gunshot echoed from directly behind him.

Marcus's eyes widened in total shock as a bright red stain rapidly expanded across his chest.

He dropped the shotgun and collapsed heavily onto the bathroom tiles, completely lifeless.

I looked up through my tears and saw the truck driver standing in the doorway, holding the smoking pistol I had dropped.

He had dragged his bleeding body across the floor to save my life one final time.

Agent Reynolds rushed into the bathroom moments later, announcing that the remaining mercenaries had retreated.

She called for immediate medical evacuation via an armored federal helicopter.

I lay on the floor, breathing heavily as Sarah expertly guided me through the terrifying delivery process.

High above the chaotic forest, inside the safety of the medical chopper, I heard the most beautiful sound in the world.

My newborn baby took a deep breath and let out a loud, healthy, and glorious cry.
