Chapter 7 - The Gas Trap

The video on my phone showed Marcus grinning like a complete psychopath.
He was standing in the living room of the supposedly secure federal safe house.
He proudly explained that Arthur's wealth had purchased the architectural blueprints for every federal safe house in the state.
He flicked the silver lighter open and closed, the flame dancing dangerously close to the invisible gas fumes.
He warned me that if I entered the house, he would blow us all to absolute pieces.
I screamed for the armored truck driver to stop the vehicle immediately.
Agent Reynolds looked at me in confusion as the heavy truck screeched to a sudden halt.
I showed her the terrifying video message, and her face went completely pale.
She immediately grabbed her radio and ordered all tactical teams to abort the approach to the safe house.
We were stranded on a deserted highway, completely cut off from our primary secure location.
Agent Reynolds realized that Arthur's mole network was much deeper than the FBI had ever anticipated.
She made a split-second decision to abandon standard protocol to keep me and my baby alive.
She ordered the driver to take us to an off-the-books location known only to a few trusted agents.
We drove for two agonizing hours deep into the dense, forested mountains.
We finally arrived at a rustic, isolated cabin surrounded by towering pine trees.
The cabin had no internet, no cell service, and was entirely off the grid.
Sarah helped me into the warm cabin and quickly started checking my vital signs.
Agent Reynolds set up a perimeter defense with the remaining loyal agents.
I sat by the stone fireplace, feeling the exhausting toll the stress was taking on my pregnant body.
I closed my eyes, praying that the nightmare was finally reaching its ultimate conclusion.
Suddenly, a loud, rhythmic knocking echoed from the heavy wooden front door.
May you like
Agent Reynolds raised her assault rifle and slowly opened the door, ready for a violent confrontation.
Standing on the porch was the truck driver, covered in blood and holding a terrifyingly large hunting knife.
