Chapter 6 - The Federal Sting

Detective Miller held the tiny memory card up to the light with a satisfied grin.
He told me that Arthur paid very well for loyal officers to clean up his family's messy mistakes.
Sarah stepped forward to defend me, but Miller quickly aimed his weapon directly at her chest.
He ordered us to walk slowly toward the back exit of the post office where his unmarked cruiser was waiting.
I felt completely defeated as I realized my entire desperate escape had led me straight into a trap.
We stepped out into the muddy alleyway behind the building, the rain soaking through my thin hospital gown.
Miller opened the back door of his cruiser and shoved me roughly against the side of the vehicle.
My stomach cramped violently, and I let out a sharp cry of pain.
Before Miller could force me into the car, the deafening sound of a helicopter rotors filled the air.
A massive black tactical vehicle smashed through the chain-link fence at the end of the alley.
Dozens of heavily armed federal agents poured out of the vehicle with their weapons drawn.
They screamed for Miller to drop his weapon and get on the muddy ground.
Miller panicked and raised his gun, but a federal sniper fired a single, precise warning shot that shattered his cruiser's window.
He dropped the gun instantly and fell to his knees in total surrender.
A tall woman in an FBI windbreaker walked through the chaos and approached me.
She introduced herself as Special Agent Reynolds and gently placed a warm blanket over my shivering shoulders.
She revealed that they had been investigating Arthur's corrupt empire for years, waiting for someone brave enough to provide undeniable evidence.
Agent Reynolds carefully confiscated the original memory card from the defeated detective.
She assured me that Marcus, Eleanor, and Arthur were all currently being raided by federal tactical teams.
I collapsed into Sarah's arms, weeping tears of profound relief and exhaustion.
Agent Reynolds escorted us safely to a heavily armored transport vehicle for the ride to a federal safe house.
I sat in the back of the armored truck, finally feeling completely safe for the first time in months.

Then my phone buzzed with an incoming video message from a blocked number.
I opened the video and saw Marcus standing inside the very safe house we were driving toward, holding a lighter near a massive gas leak.
