Chapter 8 - The Explosion

The electrical spark from the light switch was all it took.

A deafening, catastrophic explosion ripped violently through the foundation of the massive Vance estate.

The shockwave tore through the metal air duct, throwing my body aggressively forward.

I tumbled out of the collapsing vent, crashing heavily onto the marble floor of the shattered kitchen.

The entire southern wing of the mansion was engulfed in bright, roaring flames.

Thick black smoke billowed through the hallways, choking the air out of the grand estate.

I coughed up blood, my body completely battered and broken, but I was still miraculously alive.

I dragged myself toward the shattered glass of the patio doors, desperate to escape the burning inferno.

Behind me, the sound of agonizing screams echoed from the ruins of the staircase.

Flynn stumbled out of the thick smoke, his expensive suit completely charred and his face covered in dark soot.

He was limping heavily, clutching a piece of jagged shrapnel protruding from his thigh.

"You crazy bitch, you destroyed my house!" he screamed, his eyes wide with psychotic rage.

He limped toward me, fully intent on finishing the murder he had started days ago.

I tried to crawl faster, but my unhealed surgical wounds tore completely open, leaving me paralyzed in agony.

Flynn grabbed me by the hair, raising his fist to strike me down permanently.

Suddenly, a heavy, solid object struck Flynn violently across the back of the head.

He collapsed onto the marble floor, completely unconscious, dropping me instantly.

I rolled over, gasping for air, and looked up to see who had saved my life.

Standing above us, holding a heavy iron fire poker, was Selina.

Her red dress was ruined, and her face was covered in a mix of blood and dark ash.

"Why did you save me?" I rasped, completely stunned by her sudden intervention.

Selina dropped the bloody fire poker and looked at me with cold, calculating eyes.

"I didn't save you, Mabel," she stated, pulling a small silver pistol from her designer purse.

"I just needed him unconscious so I could completely drain his hidden cryptocurrency wallets."

She aimed the barrel of the gun directly at my forehead.

"You are going to take the blame for murdering your abusive husband, and I am going to disappear a very rich woman," she smiled.
