Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

Flynn tossed the blinking device onto the concrete floor right in front of me.

It was a remote monitor displaying perfectly clear security footage of me crawling out of his office vent.

My blood turned to absolute ice.

He knew I had hacked his computer, and he knew I had stolen his files.

"Hand over the USB drive right now, Mabel," he commanded, his voice deadly calm.

I backed away until my shoulders hit the cold concrete wall.

"If you kill me, Elias Thorne will release the secondary copies I already sent him," I bluffed desperately.

Flynn scoffed, stepping closer and grabbing me violently by the throat.

He slammed my head against the concrete, sending a blinding flash of pain through my skull.

"You do not have internet access in this house, so you could not have sent anything," he snarled.

He reached into my pocket and ripped the USB drive from my trembling fingers.

He threw the small plastic drive onto the floor and crushed it completely under his heavy heel.

"You are nothing without me, Mabel, and you will die exactly when I decide you die," he whispered.

He let go of my throat, leaving me gasping for air on the filthy floor.

Selina walked slowly down the stairs, clapping her hands together in dramatic applause.

"Just get rid of her tonight, Flynn, she is completely exhausting," Selina complained.

Flynn straightened his tie and nodded slowly in agreement.

"I will call the cleaners to prepare a disposal site by the river," he told her casually.

They walked back up the stairs, locking the heavy steel door and sealing my tragic fate.

I had lost the evidence, and I had mere hours left to live.

I pulled the burner phone out of my hiding spot, my hands shaking uncontrollably.

I dialed Dr. Reed’s personal cell phone number, praying he was not on shift at the hospital.

He answered immediately, his voice filled with urgent concern.

"Mabel, are you okay? I have been trying to reach you," Dr. Reed said.

"They are going to kill me tonight, Marcus, I need you to call the FBI," I sobbed into the receiver.

"The local police are corrupt, you have to bypass them entirely!" I pleaded.

Dr. Reed went completely silent on the other end of the line for several agonizing seconds.

"I cannot call the FBI, Mabel," Dr. Reed finally said, his voice completely devoid of emotion.

Before I could ask him why, the sound of a heavy door unlocking echoed through the phone.

"I cannot call them because Flynn just wired five million dollars into my offshore bank account," Dr. Reed confessed.
