Chapter 1 - The Broken Vows

Flynn went ghost-white and stumbled backward until his shoulders hit the sterile hospital wall.

He stared at my completely flat stomach, his eyes wide with a horrifying realization.

"I will give you anything you want, Mabel, but I will not sign divorce papers," he whispered.

I pressed the call button on my bedside table to summon the nurses.

"Get out of my room before I call the police and report you for attempted murder," I told him coldly.

Flynn’s expression shifted instantly from devastating guilt to a dark, calculating rage.

He wiped the tears from his face and smoothly adjusted the cuffs of his expensive designer suit.

"If you go to the police, I will absolutely destroy your family," he threatened.

My heart hammered against my ribs.

"Your father’s small manufacturing business relies entirely on contracts from Vance Global," Flynn reminded me.

He took a step closer to my bed, his voice dropping to a menacing whisper.

"If you file a police report, I will cancel those contracts and bankrupt your parents by Friday."

I glared at the man I had loved for three years, feeling nothing but pure disgust.

"You are a monster," I choked out, tears of sheer anger filling my eyes.

"I am a man protecting his empire," he replied calmly.

Dr. Marcus Reed suddenly stepped back into the room, flanked by two hospital security guards.

"Mr. Vance, your visiting hours are officially over," Dr. Reed stated firmly.

Flynn glared at the doctor, then looked back at me with a sickeningly sweet smile.

"Rest up, darling, because you are coming home to me the second you are discharged," Flynn said.

He turned on his heel and confidently walked out of the intensive care unit.

Dr. Reed approached my bed, his face filled with genuine concern.

"Are you safe at home, Mrs. Vance?" he asked softly.

I looked down at the thick white bandages wrapped tightly around my abdomen.

"No, I am not safe at all," I admitted.

Dr. Reed sighed and pulled a small, black object from the pocket of his white coat.

"Then you are going to need this," he whispered.

He slipped a cheap burner phone under my pillow just as a shadow fell across the doorway.

Selina Cole was standing in the hall, smiling at me.
