Chapter 5 - The Discovery

Flynn walked into the office, completely unaware that I was hiding mere inches from his expensive leather shoes.

He was speaking loudly on his cell phone, his tone arrogant and deeply agitated.

"I do not care what the auditors say, you hide the missing funds in the Cayman accounts!" he shouted.

I held my breath, terrified that the loud pounding of my heart would give me away.

Above me, the computer monitor cast a faint blue glow onto the floor.

The USB transfer was at ninety-five percent, but it was completely silent.

Flynn sat down heavily in his leather chair, right above my head.

"Make sure the payout to the police chief clears by tomorrow morning," Flynn instructed the person on the phone.

He ended the call with a frustrated sigh and reached for his computer mouse.

If he looked at the screen, he would immediately see the massive file transfer currently in progress.

I squeezed my eyes shut, praying for a miracle.

Suddenly, Selina’s shrill voice echoed loudly from the hallway outside the office.

"Flynn! You need to get down to the basement right now!" she screamed in a panic.

Flynn instantly pushed his chair back, his heavy shoes narrowly missing my hands.

"What did she do now, Selina?" he groaned, storming out of the office and leaving the door wide open.

I scrambled out from under the desk the second his footsteps faded down the hall.

The computer screen flashed with a bright green notification stating the transfer was absolutely complete.

I yanked the USB drive out of the tower and slipped it safely into my pocket.

I had undeniable proof of his corporate fraud and police bribery.

I quickly climbed back up the bookshelf and squeezed into the open air duct before they realized I was missing from the basement.

I crawled as fast as my injured body would allow, desperately trying to beat them back to my makeshift cell.

I dropped through the basement vent and frantically pushed the metal grate back into place.

Seconds later, the heavy steel door at the top of the stairs violently swung open.

Flynn marched down the steps, his face twisted into a mask of pure, uncontrollable fury.

"You think you are so clever, Mabel?" he sneered, turning on the harsh overhead lights.

I sat on the concrete floor, pretending to look terrified and defeated.

"I do not know what you are talking about," I lied smoothly.

Flynn reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a small, blinking digital device.

"You really thought my office was the only room in this house with hidden security cameras?" he laughed darkly.
