Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

Six months had passed since the explosive collapse of the Vance corporate empire.
I sat on the sunlit balcony of my new penthouse overlooking the beautiful, calm waters of Lake Michigan.
The federal trial had been swift and incredibly brutal for both Flynn and Selina.
Flynn was convicted of massive corporate fraud, bribery, and multiple counts of attempted murder.
He was sentenced to forty-five years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.
Selina turned state's evidence to avoid a life sentence, but she still received twenty years for her role in the conspiracy.
Because Flynn had attempted to murder me, the civil courts awarded me absolute control of his remaining legitimate assets.
I was incredibly wealthy, completely free, and finally healing from the physical and emotional trauma.
I had recently opened a massive charitable foundation dedicated to helping women escape dangerous, abusive marriages.
Elias Thorne had become a surprisingly loyal friend, completely separating his ruthless business tactics from our new partnership.
There was even a soft knock on my penthouse door that afternoon.
I opened it to find Dr. Marcus Reed standing there holding a massive bouquet of yellow sunflowers.
"I know I do not deserve your forgiveness, Mabel," Marcus said, looking deeply ashamed.
He explained that he had taken Flynn’s money only to hire a private investigative team to help the FBI build their case.
He had never truly betrayed me; he had simply played the long game to ensure Flynn went to prison forever.
I smiled, accepted the beautiful flowers, and invited him inside for a quiet, peaceful cup of coffee.
My life was finally beautiful, secure, and entirely my own.
Later that evening, after Marcus had left, I went down to the lobby to collect my daily mail.
Mixed in with the bills and charity invitations was a pristine, unmarked white envelope with no return address.
I casually opened the wax seal and pulled out a crisp, high-definition photograph.
It was an ultrasound image of two perfectly healthy twins, dated exactly from today.

I flipped the photograph over, my hands instantly beginning to shake uncontrollably.
A handwritten note in perfect, elegant calligraphy read: "You really thought those were your babies who died in that hospital? Your real children are with me."
