Chapter 8 - The Desperate Hostage

The wealthy guests screamed and dropped to the marble floor in pure terror.
Sarah stood her ground, staring straight down the barrel of David's silver revolver.
"You are completely surrounded, David," Sarah said with icy calmness.
"The police have already surrounded the building," she lied flawlessly to shake his nerves.
David’s hands trembled violently as sweat dripped down his forehead.
He realized his entire grand conspiracy had collapsed in less than five minutes.
He desperately grabbed the nearest person, a young female waiter, and pulled her in front of him.
He pressed the barrel of the revolver hard against the terrified girl's temple.
"Get back!" David shrieked, backing slowly toward the massive glass elevator.
"If anyone follows me, I will blow her brains out!" he threatened wildly.
Sarah slowly raised her hands to show she was unarmed, despite the gun on her thigh.
"Let the girl go, David," Sarah pleaded, keeping her voice incredibly steady.
"You only want me, so take me instead," Sarah offered bravely.
David laughed hysterically, his eyes wide with absolute madness.
"You ruined everything!" David screamed, shoving the crying waiter aside.
He suddenly lunged forward and grabbed Sarah by her dark hair.
He yanked her violently backward and dragged her into the glass elevator.
He punched the button for the roof access floor with a bloodied knuckle.
The elevator doors slid shut just as Detective Miller burst into the ballroom with five armed officers.
"Sarah!" Miller yelled, watching the glass car shoot rapidly upward.
Inside the rising elevator, David pinned Sarah against the cold glass wall.
"We are going to the roof, and then we are both jumping off," David whispered crazily.
"If I cannot have the money, then neither of us gets to live," he promised.
Sarah looked down through the glass floor at the rapidly shrinking ballroom below.
She knew she had less than thirty seconds before they reached the helicopter pad on the roof.
She slowly moved her right hand down the smooth fabric of her black dress.
Her fingers brushed against the cold steel of the hidden handgun strapped to her thigh.
David was too busy watching the floor numbers climb to notice her movement.
The elevator bell dinged loudly, announcing their arrival at the rooftop level.
David shoved Sarah out into the freezing, pouring rain of the night.
He dragged her toward the dangerous edge of the towering skyscraper.
"Say goodbye to your precious city," David sneered, pulling her toward the drop.
Sarah rapidly unholstered her weapon, spun around, and aimed directly at David's chest.
"Goodbye, David," Sarah said coldly.
Before she could pull the trigger, a blinding spotlight from a police helicopter illuminated the roof.

The sudden burst of intense light blinded them both completely.
Someone tackled Sarah hard from the side, knocking the gun out of her hand.
